Ohanaeze Ndigbo Celebrates Okonjo-Iweala’s Reappointment as WTO Director-General

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has commended Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her reappointment for a second term as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The group described her as a trailblazer whose contributions to governance and global economic policy have elevated Nigeria’s international standing.

In a statement, Ohanaeze highlighted Okonjo-Iweala’s exemplary leadership, noting her transformative impact during her tenure as Nigeria’s Minister of Finance. They praised her for introducing bureaucratic reforms that enhanced transparency in public offices and for leading negotiations with the Paris Club, resulting in a historic debt relief of $18 billion for Nigeria under President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration.

The organization also celebrated her consistent recognition on the global stage, citing her inclusion on the Forbes list of the 100 Most Powerful Women in the world for seven consecutive years as a testament to her influence and achievements.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo described her second term at the WTO as a victory not just for Nigeria but for Africa, reaffirming the continent’s capacity to lead in global institutions. They expressed confidence in her ability to continue driving reforms and fostering equitable trade policies worldwide.

Dr Okonjo-Iweala is the first woman and first African to hold the top position at the WTO, a feat that underscores her groundbreaking legacy.
