COVID-19 XEC Variant: Enugu State Boosts Airport Surveillance with Simulation Exercise

The Enugu State Ministry of Health has intensified efforts to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, conducting a two-day simulation exercise at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport. This proactive move comes in response to the emergence of the COVID-19 XEC variant reported in Australia and 22 other countries.

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare recently issued directives to all hospitals nationwide to maintain heightened vigilance for COVID-like symptoms, while the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) mandated health declaration forms for passengers entering Nigeria.

Addressing stakeholders during the exercise, Enugu State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Emmanuel Obi, emphasized the significance of the airport as a major entry point for international travelers and potential infectious diseases.

“Enugu State has experienced its share of infectious disease outbreaks. Through the integrated disease surveillance and response mechanism, we continuously manage and mitigate these threats. Given the international status of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, our public health emergency contingency plan ensures we are prepared to tackle any potential health risks entering the country,” Obi said.

The simulation, held at the airport tarmac and the Nigeria Safety and Investigation Bureau, focused on strengthening coordination among airport units and equipping personnel to respond effectively to emergencies.

State Epidemiologist, Dr. Ogbodo Okechukwu, highlighted the importance of the exercise, noting the ease with which diseases could spread globally within hours, particularly during peak travel seasons. He called for enhanced training and the provision of protective gear for critical staff like cleaners, stressing their role in disease prevention and management.

The initiative reflects Enugu’s commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring readiness against potential outbreaks, particularly as global travel intensifies during the festive season.
