Edo Tribunal: APC, PDP Trade Accusations as Supporters Clash at Court

By Marvelous Ayebo

Tensions flared on Monday at the Edo State High Court in Benin City during the inaugural sitting of the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal. Supporters of rival political parties clashed within the court premises, despite the presence of tight security, prompting chaos and forcing many to flee the scene.

Trigger for the Clash

The altercation was reportedly sparked by individuals wearing white fez caps and T-shirts bearing inscriptions deemed provocative by rival groups. This escalated into heated exchanges and eventually a physical confrontation.

Accusations and Denials

The Edo PDP Caretaker Committee Chairman, Tony Aziegbemi, accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Governor Monday Okpebholo of orchestrating the attack.

“It was clear that the APC and Governor Okpebholo sent thugs after the PDP members at the court. They were the aggressors, and we have reported the case to the police,” Aziegbemi alleged.

In response, the Edo APC Publicity Secretary, Peter Uwadiae-Igbinigie, denied any involvement by the party or its supporters.

“The APC and the state governor will never be involved in any chaotic situation, especially in court. I saw the video, and you cannot identify the parties involved in the melee. Our members do not engage in such acts, and we hope the police can apprehend those responsible,” Uwadiae-Igbinigie stated.

Tribunal Chairman’s Appeal for Order

During the proceedings, the tribunal’s Chairman, Justice Wilfred Kpochi, called for calm and urged all stakeholders to ensure a smooth hearing process.

“I am impressed by the conducive and calm environment I am seeing, and going forward, I would like this to continue. Let us put our eyes on the ball so we can have serene proceedings,” Justice Kpochi said.

He also cautioned counsel against engaging in unnecessary arguments that could disrupt the tribunal’s atmosphere, emphasizing the importance of decorum throughout the hearings.

Election Results Challenged

The tribunal is set to hear multiple petitions challenging the September 21, 2024, gubernatorial election, which declared APC candidate Governor Monday Okpebholo as the winner. Among those contesting the results are the PDP candidate, Asue Ighodalo, and candidates from other parties, including the Accord Party, Allied Peoples Movement, Action Democratic Party, Zenith Labour Party, and Social Democratic Party.

The panel, which also includes Justices A.B. Yusuf and A.A. Adewole, urged all parties involved to cooperate and maintain order as the tribunal proceeds.
