The Abia State Government has secured the support of the Nsulu clan in Isialangwa North Local Government Area for the proposed Abia Airport project, following initial resistance from a section of the host communities.
During a meeting with community representatives on Wednesday, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, clarified the government’s plans and addressed concerns raised by the protesters. He attributed the earlier opposition to misinformation, stating:
“Some people may not fully understand the government’s plans. This engagement ensures everyone is properly informed.”
Commitment to Dialogue and Compensation
Ajagba emphasized Governor Alex Otti’s administration’s commitment to inclusive dialogue, promising to visit all affected communities to resolve outstanding issues amicably. He assured residents that their livelihoods would be protected, and compensation would be provided for any disruptions caused by the project.
“This project is for the overall benefit of everyone. Traces are being cut now, and enumeration will follow to ensure compensation is paid to the host communities,” he said.
Community Support for Economic Development
Community leaders, including Dr. Jessy Odu and Mr. Kingsley Ukaegbu, expressed strong support for the project, highlighting its potential to boost economic activities, create jobs, and spur development in the area.
Odu noted, “The airport, when realized, will boost economic activities, create jobs for our youth, and open up the land for development.”
The leaders clarified that opposition came from only one of the eight host communities, which they attributed to a lack of accurate information about the project.
Continued Dialogue and Transparency
The meeting, attended by traditional rulers, community leaders, and the Airport Project Coordinator, Pastor Okorougo Aji, ended with a renewed commitment from the government to maintain transparency and foster dialogue throughout the project’s implementation.
The Abia Airport project is expected to serve as a significant catalyst for economic growth and infrastructure development in the state.
