Tunisia has officially confirmed its withdrawal from the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN), joining other North African nations—Libya, Egypt, and Algeria—in stepping away from the tournament.
The withdrawal means Morocco will be the only North African team participating in the prestigious competition, which is set to be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. The decision underscores a surprising regional absence, as North African countries have traditionally been key players in African football competitions.
The reasons behind Tunisia’s withdrawal remain unclear, though speculation points to scheduling conflicts, logistical issues, or broader footballing strategies. With the qualifiers for the tournament set to begin soon, Morocco now carries the mantle for the region, aiming to uphold North Africa’s competitive reputation.
The 2025 CHAN marks a historic milestone as the first edition to be co-hosted by three East African nations. The tournament, which features players competing from their domestic leagues, remains a vital platform for showcasing local talent on the continental stage.
Despite these withdrawals, anticipation for the championship remains high, with East African nations eager to spotlight their footballing infrastructure and fan enthusiasm. As teams from across the continent prepare for the qualifiers, Morocco’s lone representation from North Africa adds an intriguing twist to this year’s competition narrative.
